Some of Colorado’s very best elk hunting can be found on the Uncompaghre Plateau, particularly in Game Management Unit 61, which is a limited-license trophy draw unit. For out-of-state hunters, it can take up to 17 years to draw a Unit 61 bull tag, and the chances are very good of connecting with a trophy 6x6 bull scoring upwards of 350 Boone & Crockett points. Consequently, hunters who draw these coveted tags almost always book a hunt with a local outfitter. However, this lodge is situated literally just across the Divide Road from Unit 62, which is an “over-the-counter” unit where hunters can buy a tag up to the night prior to the hunt without having to draw. Of course, elk don’t know the difference between the two units, and it’s common for the herds to cross over from one unit to the other. Unit 62 hunting can be excellent! This business has special use permits on USFS and BLM lands in both Unit 61 and 62. While the outfitter uses horses to pack game, they literally hunt on foot right from the lodge, with excellent results. They don’t need to ride hours into the high country to find game.

The Black Timber Lodge is situated high on the Divide Road on the top of the Uncompaghre Plateau, right in the heart of elk country, surrounded on all sides by National Forest lands, accessed by a well-maintained gravel road that closes in the winter. The 35-acre parcel has pasture to keep a herd of 8-10 horses, as well as 3 ponds. The lodge is very functional and sleeps up to 22 people. Originally a settler’s cabin, the lodge has been expanded with a large dining room, several bathrooms with multiple stalls, a septic system, and drinking water purified from a nearby spring. Power is provided by a generator; it would be fairly simple to install a solar power system. Heat is provided by wood-burning stoves and propane heat. Outside, there is a separate shed building to store gas cans and various flammable items; diesel and gasoline fuel tanks; and a carport with equipment shed. The lodge is complete with all bedding, kitchen utensils, furniture, and even large elk and mule deer trophies. There is also plenty of room to build additional cabins.
