MARKING MILESTONES: UNITED’S EVOLUTION AND INNOVATION IN THE 1960S

As we celebrate 100 years of success, we’re taking a moment to look back at the evolution of farming, ranching, and rural living over the decades. By the time the 1960s arrived, agriculture had undergone a major transformation. Pitchforks and manual labor were giving way to push-button machinery, and advancements in crop science were reshaping the industry. In the midst of these changes, United reached a milestone of its own, celebrating 40 years of service in 1965.

United continued its innovative approach to marketing rural and lifestyle real estate in the sixties, pioneering national magazine advertising to expand exposure for local listings. This forward-thinking strategy helped connect buyers and sellers across the country, solidifying United’s role as a leader in the industry.

One of the most memorable moments of this era came in 1965 when United recorded its 100,000th sale. The landmark transaction took place in Athens, Texas, where Col. G.E. Brown and Maj. H.A. Mott purchased a 150-acre tract of land. To commemorate the occasion, United covered the entire cost of a full carpet of Bermuda grass for the property—a fitting celebration of the company’s success and its commitment to rural landowners.

However, the decade also brought bittersweet news. In February 1968, United’s founder, Roscoe L. Chamberlain, passed away. Chamberlain had remained honorary chairman of the agency’s board until his passing, leaving behind a legacy of innovation and excellence. His son, Robert Chamberlain, who had been with United since 1934, carried on his father’s vision as chairman, ensuring that United continued to grow and thrive.

Reflecting on this pivotal era reminds us of the resilience, dedication, and forward-thinking mindset that have shaped United’s journey. As we honor our 100-year anniversary, we remain committed to the same principles that have guided us through the decades—innovation, service, and a passion for connecting people with the land they love.
